I saw a lot of legendary musicians at the country music festivals held at Hunter Mountain: Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams Jr., The Charlie Daniels Band, and the Mavericks, just to name a few. But because my love of country music was just developing, I missed out on a ton more. When I get a hold of an old schedule from back then, I wince thinking about the great people I could have seen — often twice in one day, for one admission price (I also wince thinking about the Country Music Festival t-shirt I used to have but is now long gone).

And in the last few years, as I’ve delved deeper into polka music, I’ve discovered I missed a lot of incredible polka musicians as well, by writing off the yearly Polish Festival as something only for people who liked Bobby Vinton. Ah, the foolishness of youth. Luckily, there are some YouTube clips of Hunter Mountain Polish Festival shows out there, including this one of Happy Louie. It’s not quite like being there, but it’ll have to do.
